Indian composer Salim Merchant reveals his 'special bond' with Rahat Fateh Ali Khan

In a heartfelt Instagram post, Indian composer Salim Merchant recently celebrated his brotherly bond with the renowned Pakistani singer and qawwal Rahat Fateh Ali Khan. As one half of the Salim–Sulaiman duo, Salim shared a carousel of pictures capturing their journey, from various shows to casual get-togethers. Although the locations were unspecified, Salim highlighted the significance of the "last picture in this sequence," revealing it as the moment they recorded the poignant track, Aafreen.  The caption of the post expressed Salim's gratitude for both working with and knowing Rahat closely. “We share a special bond and brotherhood with Rahat bhai,” he penned. “From Ore Piya, Saaiyaan, Dillagi , Mujhko Teri Zaroorat , Padharo Maula, Aafreen and performing together a few times... I cannot express my happiness to have known him so closely," added the composer.         View this post on Instagram                       A post shared by Salim Merchant (@salimmerchant) The diversity of Rahat and Salim's musical repertoire showcases the richness of their partnership. And in essence, Salim's post also serves as an inspiration for artists to continue creating boundary-defying masterpieces instead of using art as a tool to propagate hatred or further nationalistic agendas -- we're looking at you, Fighter makers.  Despite the complexities that may exist between nations, the bond between Salim and Rahat emphasises the universal language of music, capable of fostering understanding and unity. Salim's post also highlights the enduring nature of artistic connections, unencumbered by political differences – something fans of both Bollywood films and Pakistani music want desperately. “It’s an absolute shame we are deprived of this talent singing for us! Let art be free of all politics…” wrote a user under Salim’s post. “Wow, those were the days when we used to get songs from across borders,” added another. “You forgot the mega song Habibi,” reminded a fan. “What collaborations. Legends. Bollywood misses RFAK sir,” lamented one more. Have something to add to the story? Share it in the comments below.
