Bollywood star Aamir Khan was set to receive the Screen Icon Award at the 37th Singapore International Film Festival, where he was also scheduled to join director Ashutosh Gowariker for a special screening marking 25 years of Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India.
According to Gulf News, Khan was to be recognised for his contribution to Asian cinema with the award, which honours actors whose work has made a significant creative impact on the region’s film industry.
Khan was also scheduled to participate in the festival’s “In Conversation With” programme, giving audiences an opportunity to hear from him as part of the anniversary celebrations.
The Singapore International Film Festival is scheduled to take place from October 21 to November 1, with the 2026 edition being held earlier than its traditional schedule.
Celebrating 25 years of Lagaan
Released on June 15, 2001, Lagaan emerged as one of the most ambitious Hindi films of its era. Directed by Gowariker and starring Khan, the film combined a period drama set during British colonial rule with the unlikely setting of a cricket match.
The film’s international journey became a defining chapter in Indian cinema when Lagaan was selected as India’s entry for the Academy Awards and earned a nomination for Best Foreign Language Film at the 74th Academy Awards.
Its anniversary screening in Singapore therefore marked 25 years since the film helped introduce a major Hindi-language production to a much wider global audience.
According to Gulf News, Khan had attended a screening at the London Indian Film Festival in July, where he spoke about the success of Lagaan.
“As Lagaan completes 25 years, it’s hard to put into words what this journey has meant. We made the film with a lot of belief, passion, and honesty, never imagining the kind of love it would receive and continue to receive all these years later,” he said.
